Physical Therapy in Flushing

Welcome to Movement Concepts Physical Therapy!

Long Island Sports and Physical Therapy, founded by orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Patrick J. DeRosa MD in 1982, has evolved into a flourishing practice under the management of his daughter Cristina DeRosa PTA, and physical therapist Dr. Kristin D. Conforti.

Cristina DeRosa graduated with honors from Penn State University,  receiving a Bachelors in Business and Psychology.  After returning from school she worked alongside her father running his physical therapy practice since 2009.  Her desire to directly help the patients she had worked so closely with and become “family” to her and her father led her to complete her Physical Therapy Assistant Degree in 2017 from Nassau Community College.

Kristin Conforti accepted her first job after graduating from Quinnipiac University with her Masters of Science and minor in Psychology at Long Island Sports working directly with Dr. DeRosa.  After completing her Doctorate in 2010 from Northeastern University, Kristin furthered her clinical experience and founded Movement Concepts Physical Therapy, P.C in 2013.

Together they are proud to carry on the legacy of excellent care and dedication that Dr. DeRosa started in Rockville Centre and Bohemia, which included rehabilitation ranging from weekend warriors to professional athletes. Not only did Cristina and Kristin join their previously established practice locations, but have successfully gone on to open their third location in Flushing, in order to further expand their services to nearby communities. What is Physical Therapy?

Physical Therapy is defined as therapy for the preservation, improvement or restoration of movement and physical function impaired by disability, injury or disease. Successful treatments utilize a combination of therapeutic exercise, physical modalities such as (heat/ice, cold laser, electric stimulation) assistive devices, manual therapy techniques, and patient education.

How do I choose a Physical Therapist?

When choosing any Doctor is important to consider the following expectations are being met.  Ask yourself, can my therapist…..

  • Provide a comfortable and professional environment?
  • Answer my questions throughout the course of the treatment about my diagnosis and prognosis?
  • Treat me on an individual basis including therapeutic exercise, manual therapy techniques as well as a home exercise program to improve outcomes?
  • Encourage preventative measures to help maintain a healthy lifestyle?

First appointment: What you should bring with you.

Ideally, you should come wearing athletic and comfortable clothing.  If you have a prescription from a doctor, please remember to bring it with you, as well as a photo id, insurance card, and any test results you have, such as an MRI.

How long is each treatment?

Because patients’ treatments are developed on an individual basis, treatment times will vary.  Your physical therapist will prescribe a program that will improve joint mobility, increase strength and correct muscle imbalances contributing to your pain. The average time you should expect to spend at Physical therapy is about an 1 hour. Initial evaluations are approximately 1.5 hours.

Does your health insurance cover payment of costs?

We are happy to assist you. If you have any questions about whether your health insurance covers the costs of your treatments, we’d be happy to assist you- just call us at  516 227-5344 or come into our office.

Do I need to see a physician before starting physical therapy?

A prescription from a physician is usually necessary so that your insurance carrier will cover your treatment. This can be from your primary MD, orthopedist, physiatrist or Nurse Practitioner. Some insurances honor Direct Access which allows your Physical Therapist to treat you for 12 visits or 30 days based on their comprehensive evaluation and diagnosis of your condition.

What is Direct Access?

In conversation with our patients, we realized that many don’t know that Physical Therapists in New York State have direct access. This means you DO NOT have to see a physician before being evaluated by a PT. Doctors of Physical Therapy (DPT) are skilled professionals that can differentially diagnose, recognize red flags, and implement appropriate exercise and rehabilitation plans ranging from orthopedic to neurological issues.

Yes, under Medicare, No Fault, and Workers Compensation guidelines you DO NEED to be under a MD’s care with monthly check ups. Under most NYS insurances, you can see your PT for 30 days or 10 visits and be confident we can diagnose, treat, and eventually refer you to the appropriate healthcare practitioner if symptoms persist. Importance Of Good Posture

Bad posture is a habit that many people suffer from. It can lead to an array of different issues which can ultimately impact your overall health. At Movement Concepts, our physical therapy in Flushing recognizes the importance of good posture and aims to help our patients reach the best, pain-free life possible.

Good posture is important for a variety of different reasons, both severe and minor. These reasons include:

  • Increased confidence levels
    • Good posture will improve how you look to others and how you look to yourself. By standing up straight, you will add height and look slimmer, as well as an improvement in overall mood.
  • Improved circulation and digestion
    • When you have poor posture, you put a lot of pressure on your internal organs. This extra pressure can lead to difficulty with digestion. This can lead to more problems such as constipation, acid reflux, and hernias.
  • Helps your muscles and joints
    • Good posture allows your bones and joints to stay properly aligned. This is important to prevent the abnormal wearing of your joints that could result in serious conditions.
    •
  • Easier to breathe
    • When you are in a slouching position, you are limiting your airways and making it harder for yourself to breathe and catch your breath. You also are putting your ribcage in an unnatural position which can add additional pressure onto your lungs.
  • Avoid injury
    • By putting too much pressure on your joints, it can lead to the connective tissue wearing away. This can lead to your bones rubbing against each other and can not only be painful but can also lead to more serious conditions such as arthritis.

Causes

Our physical therapy in Flushing can help you find the root of your bad posture. Bad posture is caused by a variety of different things such as:

  • Sitting down a lot

  • Old habits
  • Pregnancy

Fall Sports Safety

Fall is here! That means fall sports are in full swing, whether it may be youth, high school, college, or pro level.  As fun as participation in fall sports can be, the risk of injury is present for anyone involved. Popular fall sports such football, soccer, and cross country can bring along a multitude of injuries with its participation.  If you experience an unfortunate injury this fall season, our experienced physical therapy in Flushing at Movement Concepts Physical Therapy can help.  But before an injury might occur, there are ways that you can prevent such an event.

Common fall sports injuries

Some injuries commonly seen in the fall months are concussions, ACL tears, shin splints, and others. While these injuries are a bit more complex, they can be a bit more difficult to prevent.  Yet other common injuries such as a muscle pull, strain, soreness, or tightness are a bit more easy to prevent. With the cold weather coming in as well, this can add to the chance that you may experience an injury.

Ways to avoid injuries

To avoid these common injuries, it is important that athletes have a proper warm up routine before they engage in high-intensity competition.  This may involve a 5-10 minute jog, followed by a dynamic stretching routine, where you are constantly moving through your routine.  You know you are warmed up if you have an elevated heart rate, you’re sweating, and you feel loose and ready to go. In addition to a proper warm up routine, proper hydration is equally important to preventing common injuries.  You should be constantly drinking water through the day, and if you know you are going to engage in some type of exercise later in the day, you should drink more water than you normally would.  Specifically, you should drink 17-20 ounces of water 2-3 hours before exercise, another 8 ounces during your warmup, 7-10 ounces every 10-20 minutes during your exercise and 8 ounces within 30 minutes after your exercise.   As far as nutrition, which is another key aspect of preparation, should contain healthy options before exercise.  Your diet should contain healthy carbohydrates such as whole-grain cereal with low-fat or skim milk, whole-grain toast with light spreads, a low-fat yogurt, whole-grain pasta, brown rice, and fruits and vegetables.  You ideally want to eat your meal 2-3 hours before your exercise, with a small snack up to 30 minutes before.

Physical Therapy in Flushing

These tips should help to avoid some common injuries that you might experience while playing sports in the fall.  In the event that an injury does occur, our skilled team of physical therapy trainers at Movement Concepts Physical Therapy in Flushing will be here to help you through your recovery process.  Until then, stay safe and have fun!

Physical Therapy for Chronic Pain

Are everyday activities painful for you? No matter how young or old you may be, chronic pain is not something that should go untreated. What are the Types of Pain?

One significant differentiation is acute pain vs chronic pain. The former will last typically three months or less where the latter will last for months and years beyond that. Important questions to ask yourself when handling either acute or chronic pain are:

  1. Where is the location of your pain?
  2. When did your pain start?
  3. How bad is the pain?
  4. What makes the pain better or worse?
  5. How does pain affect your daily activities?

How Can Physical Therapy in Flushing Diagnose Your Pain?

Discussing the answers to these questions with a physical therapist can help ascertain the best treatment plan. At your first physical therapy visit, you will be evaluated through a variety of measures which include:

  • Physical Examination
  • History of Pain
  • Medical History
  • Lifestyle Factors

Depending on the nature of your pain, the root cause can be several things including degenerative disease, injury, or a medical condition. If you are looking for physical therapy in Flushing, Movement Concepts Physical Therapy can help by:
