Our Story
Long Island Sports and Physical Therapy, founded by an orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Patrick J. DeRosa MD in 1982, has evolved into a flourishing practice under the management of his daughter Cristina DeRosa PTA, and physical therapist Dr. Kristin D. Conforti. Cristina DeRosa graduated with honors from Penn State University, receiving a Bachelor’s in Business and Psychology. After returning from school she worked alongside her father running his physical therapy practice since 2009. Her desire to directly help the patients she had worked so closely with and become “family” to her and her father led her to complete her Physical Therapy Assistant Degree in 2017 from Nassau Community College. Kristin Conforti accepted her first job after graduating from Quinnipiac University with her Masters of Science and minor in Psychology at Long Island Sports working directly with Dr. DeRosa. After completing her Doctorate in 2010 from Northeastern University, Kristin furthered her clinical experience and founded Movement Concepts Physical Therapy, P.C in 2013. Together they are proud to carry on the legacy of excellent care and dedication that Dr. DeRosa started in Rockville Centre and Bohemia, which included rehabilitation ranging from weekend warriors to professional athletes. Healthy Exercises for Back Strength
You may not realize it, but we use our back muscles for essentially every daily activity we do. These activities can range from going to the gym to carrying in the groceries. There are 140 muscles in the back that are being used which is why it’s important to maintain your back strength with specific exercises. Early signs of back pain include muscle spasms and unusual pain. At Movement Concepts Physical Therapy, our specialists can help guide you to keeping and/or regaining your back strength. If you are looking for Carle Place physical therapy, give us a call today to see how we can help.
Early Causes of Back Pain
Whether it’s acute or chronic, back pain can be developed in ways that you wouldn’t expect. Because we use our back muscles every day, it’s hard to tell when they’re being overused. Some causes of back pain include:
- Muscle or ligament strain: Heavy lifting or awkward movements can cause muscle or ligament strain, especially when they’re done repeatedly. Being in poor physical condition makes this worse.
- Ruptured discs: The cushions that sit in between the bones of your spine are the discs. When these are damaged, it can cause serious pain to the entire back.
- Arthritis: When this happens in the spine, it can lead to contracting space which makes back movement extremely difficult and/or uncomfortable.
Exercises for Back Strength
- Reverse flys: This is when you bend your body forward while moving your arms in and out. This can be done with or without weights depending on body type and strength. Your knees and elbows should be slightly bent.
- Bent over row: This exercise requires the same body position as the first except this time, your arms will come into your chest. This can also be done with or without weights. It’s important to keep your elbows tight and parallel to your body.
- Opposite arm and leg reach: This exercise is done on the floor without weights. Simply get on all fours, keep your head up, and reach out your right arm while extending back your left leg.
- Superman or swan dive: This exercise is also done on the floor. Using your back and abdominal strength, pull up your upper body and feet without pushing off the ground. This not only helps build muscle, but it’s a great way to stretch out the back.

Physical Therapy for Tendonitis
Tendonitis is a condition in which a tendon, the tissue which connects the muscles to the bones, becomes inflamed. It can occur anywhere tendons are found but is most common in the knee, wrist, heel, elbow, and shoulder. Tendon injuries occur when your tendon is not able to withstand the amount of work you performed. For instance, changing the way your body has been moving, thus putting extra stress on the tendon. Essentially, your tendon is being overused. When your tendon becomes inflamed, you may experience swelling, pain, and soreness for a few days to a week. Sometimes, the tendon can get past the inflammation on its own, but when it fails to do so, it may lead to cellular changes making it difficult to withstand repetitive or hard tasks. If you have been experiencing continuous flare-ups and pain, contact our Carle Place physical therapy to understand how we can be of help with your tendonitis.
What are the signs and symptoms?
When a tendon attaches to a bone, you may experience the following signs and symptoms:
- Tenderness
- Swelling
- Pain — often a “dull” ache, especially when moving the affected area
Visit our Carle Place physical therapy if you are experiencing any of these signs or symptoms.
What are the causes?
Tendonitis may be caused by a sudden injury, but is more likely to stem from the repetitive motion of a particular movement. Most individuals develop tendonitis from their jobs or hobbies which include repetitive motions; this puts stress on the tendons. This is why the proper technique is crucial for repetitive movements. Improper technique can lead to tendonitis when you overload the tendon during these movements.
How can I treat tendonitis?
The goals of tendinitis treatment are to restore movement without pain in the affected areas and maintain strength in the surrounding muscles while allowing the tissues to heal properly. Returning too quickly to the activity which caused the tendonitis can lead to bigger problems such as chronic overuse tendinopathy or torn tendons. An immediate treatment option recommended by doctors and physical therapists is R.I.C.E. – Rest, ice, compression, and elevation of the affected tendon. Your physician may also recommend anti-inflammatory medication to relieve inflammation or pain. A physical therapist may suggest an exercise plan that allows the tendon to rest while strengthening the nearby muscle groups; exercising the tendon itself will be a gradual process. He/she may include eccentric exercises that gradually strengthen the muscle while stretching, but stop the exercise at the first sign of pain. With your doctor’s or physical therapist’s approval, you may try these simple stretching exercises.

Signs of Whiplash – Help From Carle Place Physical Therapy
Whiplash is a common neck injury that occurs when a person makes a sudden backward or forward jerking motion with their head. This condition causes a sprain or strain in the neck as the tissues are being stretched beyond their normal range of motion. At Movement Concepts Carle Place physical therapy, we commonly treat whiplash and can get you recovered and feeling good as new!
How Do I Know if I Have Whiplash?
Whiplash is mostly associated with car accidents but can also be a result of other neck traumas such as work or sports-related injuries. Some of the most common symptoms of whiplash include:
- Neck pain with a feeling of stiffness
- Headaches that are specifically at the base of the skull
- Vertigo
- Impaired vision
- Consistent weariness in the neck
If your symptoms get worse over time, you should follow up with your physician immediately to prevent further damage. A physician may recommend an MRI or a CT scan to make sure your pain is not associated with another type of neck injury. Some of the more serious symptoms of whiplash that require immediate medical attention include:
- Memory impairment and an inability to focus
- A ringing sound in the ears
- Having trouble with falling asleep or staying asleep
- A sense of ill temperament
- Consistent pain in the neck and head that spreads to the shoulders and arms
If you think you may have whiplash and you are looking for Carle Place physical therapy, contact us at Movement Concepts Physical Therapy.
Whiplash Treatment
There is no specific cure for whiplash, but there are some ways to alleviate symptoms. Older treatments of whiplash suggested immobilization of the neck by utilizing a motion-restricting collar, but newer studies have shown that early movements of the neck are beneficial. Applying ice to the neck is recommended in the first 24 hours following the injury, along with OTC anti-inflammatory or muscle relaxant medications.
In addition to symptom management, a physician will want you to follow up with a physical therapist. During your rehabilitation, simple neck exercises will help rebuild and restore the muscles and flexibility in your neck. No intense or heavy exercising is required and should be avoided to prevent further pain or injury.
If you have whiplash and you are looking for Carle Place physical therapy, please contact Movement Concepts Physical Therapy for an evaluation.
